Abstract

Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is increasingly being used for treating various urological and non-urological disorders. Most of our knowledge regarding its use for urological conditions is gat-hered from the injection of onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox®) into the urethra, prostate, bladder and pelvic floor for the treatment of voiding and sexual dysfunctions such as bladder / detrusor overac-tivity, detrusor – sphincter dyssynergia, benign prostatic hyperplasia, interstitial cystitis / painful bladder syndrome, chronic pelvic pain and prema-ture ejaculation.

Numerous clinical trials demonstrated that carefully performed BoNT injections are well to-lerated because of their high efficacy and low ad-verse event profile. However, multi-center studies with longer follow-up period are required for elu-cidating the long-term efficacy and side effects of BoNT therapy,

Key Words: Benign prostatic hyperplasia, Bo-tulinum neurotoxin, Detrusor overactivity, Det-rusor – sphincter dyssynergia, Interstitial cystitis, Voiding dysfunction, Chronic pelvic pain
