Abstract

Urinary retention, defined as the inability to pass urine, is one of the most common complicati-ons observed after surgery. The frequency of cases of urinary retention after surgery ranges from 5 % to 70 % depending on the type and causes of the surgery. Inefficient handling of urinary retention after surgery  causes discomfort in a patient and results in permanent damage in the bladder, which consequently extends the duration of patient’s stay in the hospital thus increasing the costs. It is suggested that patients with a high risk factor for urinary retention should be identified before the surgery and algorithms, prepared according to the evidence based practices, should be applied to the-se patients.

Key Words: post-operative urinary retention, urinary retention, voiding trial, urinary system
